Not sure if it’s still valid as it’s 9 years old. But it was already quite old when I did this search in 2009, and Grub tends to move slowly (not a criticism, I think we do need some stability in that part of a system), so who knows…
The main point was that Grub had harsh constraints on the picture you can use as a background (14 colors, 640×480 res), meaning it’s not easy to get a create a good looking picture by yourself. Which is why I also search for a few premade compatible pictures (last 4 links)
