Various notes / Contact

Just a place for me to post general purpose comments about the blog notepad that wouldn’t fit in the comments of any existing post and wouldn’t either be worth creating a whole post about it. Can also be used by you to contact me through comments without posting off-topic elsewhere. Note that comments made here and which I assume should be considered as private communication won’t be displayed on the site (if they get caught into moderation first) or will be removed from display (if they don’t).

If you happen to be IP-banned by the anti-spam extensions in use around here, you can also contact me via PrivacyBox there: Update 1: PrivacyBox shut down, so you’ll have to use my OpenPGP key manually, sorry 🙁 Or you could just use Tor, it shouldn’t be blocked.

Now, to get this area started: I just wanted to say that I don’t approve the kind of ads AdBrite is showing here right now… (I prefer not to mention the keywords in order to avoid being classified as fishy by search engines ^^). Update 2: AdBrite shut down too… :/ Now we have Anonymous Ads, which is actually much better and pays out the earnings regularly instead of stashing them until they bankrupt 😉

Also, the comment form requires an e-mail address because that’s apparently how WordPress works (why they don’t let admins make it optional beats me), but the address is actually useless and never verified so you can just put anything in there (as long as it’s formatted like a valid address)

Since I was getting about 10 spam comments a day, I just hardened anti-spam measures quite a bit. Let’s hope nobody legitimate gets blocked though :s (if so, you can drop me an e-mail at [this domain name] @ [this domain name].com to let me know)

Edit: just received first spam comment since updating the configuration, so apparently all works fine 🙂

    Hello there!

Thanks for the Firefox addon for scroogle; I too am a retired programmer that is chomping at the bit to do some! C/C++ Sharp,Java before that; even ASM and VB.

Rather do tough C work, however and am quite good at tight pointer code.

Know of any projects, opensource perhaps, that could use a good C programmer or where I could look to get active?

There really is plenty to choose from! My personal favorites of the moment would be or, although they’re probably more C++ & Qt than just C. Probably interesting cryptographic stuff in them.
I guess could be interesting too (and this one is in C), but probably is more in need of help as it seems from the seemingly low activity.
If you’re more into games, why not for instance? I’m not sure what language they use but I’d bet there’s some large dose of C or C++ somewhere, and there’s definitely work to be done on the optimization side.

That’s just random thoughts of the moment, where I tried to pick projects that seem to have a somewhat low developer count, but you can surely find lots of other projects for instance by browsing sourceforge 😉

There’s been a little accident during my last spam clean-up. If you posted a comment between Sept 27 and now, it may have been lost in the process, sorry 🙁 Comments already validated got mixed up with comments pending moderation (which are pre-filtered as spam) and I may have trashed then inadvertently (as far as I recall, no more than 1 or 2 comments should be affected). Hurray for WordPress’s confusing comment moderation panel where it’s so easy to accidentally switch from “pending” to “all” comments :s

This application is modifying the autolayout engine from a background thread, which can lead to engine corruption and weird crashes. This will cause an exception in a future release.

Aloha a nui loa David! 🙂

I just had to let you know that we all out here owe you a MASSIVE debt of gratitude for the work you do.

It’s absolutely a nightmare that these [flash] packages are updated so often and for all of us that like to customize our systems, what you provide is a BLESSING.

When and if I get back to work (disabled USMC Vet), or win the lottery first, you are at or near the top of my list of people to donate to.

In the meantime, I CAN offer you free surfing lessons in Hawai’i (totally serious)
So just let me know when you get there, and we’ll take care of you.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you are helping us with!

Why thanks a lot 🙂 HawaiÊ»i is at the other end of the world for me, but who knows, if I travel there I’ll know where to learn surfing ^^

Hello! I would like to update your W4G_Rating_Bar mediawiki extension to support recent Mediawiki versions, however the license on the last version (2.1.2, updated in 2011) is CC BY-NC-ND 3.0, which explicitly forbids distributing your code with any changes made.

Could you please allow licensing your code under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, to allow distributing modifications?

    Thank you!
    – Alex

I also replied by e-mail to make sure you get it, but yes, no problem to re license it to CC BY-NC-SA 4.0

    Hi there,

I have a couple of questions regarding Wiki4Games, mainly options for continuing it 🙂 Maybe you can drop me a message to my email address.

    Thanks, cheers from Germany,

Just so that if someone notices it, they don’t feel the need to make a report about it: yes I did notice all the “rev=”post-xxxx”” things that popped up all around the place lately.

I think the theme might be dying from the years of WordPress updates… and the years of no theme updates: I think it’s remained the same for like 10 years (or even more as I don’t recall ever updating it since I set up WordPress), to the point that I had to remove a credit link that had turned into either an abandoned domain or a spam domain (not quite sure anymore)

Anyhow, we’ll see how this unfolds with upcoming updates.
To be honest, I’m really not in a hurry to be forced to pick a new theme: I’ve tried a few times already, I just can’t find another theme I like. But as far as I remember, at least I only made very few manual edits to the theme, so switching to a new one shouldn’t mean losing many blocks. I think just the ad at the top (is anyone not blocking it anyway? FYI it’s definitely not Google crap though) and the little blah blah in the footer that is already 2 years late as far as the copyright date is concerned.

PS: and just in case one of them passes by, hello to the crazy numerous Singaporeans who’ve been visiting the gallery since last spring 🙂
