How to remove/edit custom statuses in Xfire

Xfire is a free game-tracking instant messaging program. Among other things, it lets you set custom status messages to replace the standards [empty], [current music] or [current game]. The problem with that custom status feature is that whenever you want to change it, the old version is kept, with no way to delete it from the program. For instance if you just want to fix a typo, you’ll end up with 2 nearly identical statuses (among which one with the typo…).

It is however possible to manually edit Xfire’s configuration file. That file is located at %appdata%\Xfire\XfireUser.ini (on Windows XP this points to C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Application Data\Xfire, on Windows Vista/Se7en it points to C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Roaming\Xfire). Open it with a text editor such as Notepad/Notepad++ (make sure Xfire isn’t running because it will overwrite the file with what is currently in its memory when you close it later). Then find the section starting with [Status], which will look like this:
[Status]
Custom1=your first custom status
Custom2=another one
Custom3=maybe another one?
Custom4=one more custom message
You can then simply remove the line containing the status you want to remove. Don’t forget to renumber the “CustomX” names so that there is no gap in the series (Custom1, Custom2, etc.). Then just save, and you can relaunch Xfire.
